Early Works (1975-1981)

Born in India and educated in the UK, Salman Rushdie burst onto the literary scene in the 1980s with Midnight’s Children—a magical realism masterpiece that won the Booker Prize and changed modern literature forever.

His early works explored identity, migration, and post-colonialism, making him a global voice for storytelling.

Controversy (1988 - The Satanic Verses)

Rushdie’s career took a dramatic turn in 1988 with The Satanic Verses. The novel sparked global controversy, with some accusing it of blasphemy. It led to protests, bans, and even a fatwa calling for his death by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini.

Rushdie spent years in hiding, under police protection, but he never stopped writing or speaking out for freedom of expression.

Knife (2022 - Present)

In 2022, Rushdie’s life was once again thrust into the spotlight when he was brutally attacked on stage in New York.

The assault left Rushdie with severe injuries, including damage to his liver, nerves in one arm, and the loss of an eye. It was a shocking moment that reminded the world of the dangers he’s faced for decades because of his writing.
